NEWS RELEASE: National Veterinary Association Calls on Animal Owners to Feed Appropriate Balanced Diets; Fight Obesity

October 3, 2019

OTTAWA, Ont. – The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) celebrates Animal Health Week from October 6 to 12, 2019 by drawing attention to the importance of enhancing animal health through proper nutrition.

This year’s Animal Health Week theme, Optimal Nutrition for Optimal Health, provides an opportunity to remind animal owners and caretakers about one of the most important components of animal health – a balanced and nutritious diet.

“Proper nutrition can help set the stage for our animals to live healthy lives,” says Dr. Melanie Hicks, CVMA President. “Eating a balanced diet is as important for our pets, livestock, and other animals as it is for us. It is important to seek professional veterinary advice regarding what and how much you feed your animals based on species, age, and overall health.”

During this Animal Health Week, we’re reminding animal owners:

  • Optimal nutrition is central to optimal health and well-being.
  • Diets must be appropriate for species, breed, age, and health status of an animal.
  • Portion control is of utmost importance – obesity is a leading cause of illness and premature death in overfed animals.
  • All diets, prepared commercially or at home, must be formulated with appropriate balances of essential nutrients as required by your animal.
  • Speak to your veterinary team for advice on types and amounts of food your animal needs.

“Weight control and management are essential to increase the length of pets' lives,” adds Dr. Hicks. “Excessive weight can exacerbate illness, cause disease, and make it difficult to diagnose ongoing health issues. Healthy and physically fit pets tend to live longer, happier lives.”

Veterinary practices across Canada are celebrating Animal Health Week this year through various events and engaging their clientele through educational resources.

The CVMA celebrates Animal Health Week in partnership with the Registered Veterinary Technologists and Technicians of Canada. This year’s Animal Health Week is generously sponsored by Royal Canin, iFinance Canada (Petcard), and The Personal Home and Auto Insurance.
