The 2017/2018 SCVMA President's Greeting

November 27, 2017

Welcome back to school everyone! I hope you all had a fun and relaxing summer break. I would like to send a warm welcome to all those who began their veterinary school careers this September. You are joining a community of supportive and passionate veterinarians, students, and other veterinary health professionals from across the country. I am excited to meet many of you and wish you all the best as you enjoy your first year of vet school.  I would also like to welcome back our international Students of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (SCVMA) affiliates from seven schools across the world.

We are very fortunate to have the support of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) at our respective veterinary schools. I would like to take this opportunity to let you know about the many CVMA member benefits you can enjoy. Some of the most tangible benefits include discounted insurance, hotels, car rentals, gym memberships and more! We also offer resources specifically for vet students including the new graduate survey, VetRap newsletter, and the largest Canadian veterinary student event of the year, the SCVMA Symposium. The SCVMA is committed to fostering relationships between the veterinary student communities across Canada through these initiatives.

The theme of CVMA’s latest strategic plan is “a successful career, a balanced life.” To support this initiative, I highly encourage you, as vet students, to visit the CVMA Website’s Veterinarian Health and Wellness Resources section. This will give you great advice and strategies to prioritize your mental and physical wellbeing while successfully tackling vet school and your careers beyond!

In addition to CVMA’s member services, the CVMA plays a significant role in representing a unified voice for Canadian veterinarians. The profession as a whole benefits greatly from having a rational, evidence-based voice that represents veterinarians to the public. Your opinion as a veterinary student is highly valued by the CVMA, and I hope you will use the many opportunities to let your own voice be heard, for example, by providing your feedback on proposed CVMA position statements.

In closing, I hope everyone has had a wonderful first semester and that many of you will be able to attend the SCVMA Symposium at the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), January 12-13, 2018! Join our Facebook Group “Students of the CVMA” to stay up to date on the activities of the SCVMA. As the SCVMA President, I will act as a liaison between Canadian veterinary students and the CVMA Council, and keep you updated on CVMA activities. I would like to invite you to share your feedback and ideas with either myself, or your school’s SCVMA representative. We would love to hear from you!
