Animal Health Week: October 6–12, 2019 - Optimal Nutrition for Optimal Health: Talk to Your Veterinary Team About Your Animal’s Dietary Needs

July 8, 2019

The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) has been running the Animal Health Week campaign for more than 30 years and this year the importance of nutrition is emphasized. The subject underscores the importance of providing animals with balanced and nutritious meals in order to establish a base for overall health and wellness.

During Animal Health Week, from October 6–12, 2019, animal owners are reminded that they can help protect the animals in their care by feeding them healthy, balanced meals. This year’s theme, Optimal Nutrition for Optimal Health, provides an opportunity to encourage animal owners to speak to their veterinary teams about creating the best individual nutrition protocol for their animals. Good nutrition forms the basis of an animal’s overall health.

During this Animal Health Week, animal owners are reminded:

  • Optimal nutrition is central to optimal health and well-being.
  • Diets must be appropriate for species, breed, age, and health status of an animal.
  • Portion control is of utmost importance — obesity is a leading cause of illness and premature death in overfed animals.
  • All diets, prepared commercially or at home, must be formulated with appropriate balances of essential nutrients your animal requires.
  • Speak to your veterinary team for advice on types and amounts of food your animal needs.

Celebrate Animal Health Week

Veterinary health teams are invited to celebrate Animal Health Week with the CVMA. Each year veterinary teams rank waiting room displays as the most popular way of celebrating Animal Health Week, followed closely by client contests. In addition to the official campaign poster, the following items are available to engage the entire healthcare team and help celebrate Animal Health Week:

  • Paw shaped pet food scoops
  • Cat-specific products (new)
  • Temporary tattoos
  • Pet rescue window decals
  • CVMA Activity Books, “Big or Small, We Help Them All!”
  • Kitten sports pack, which can be used for a variety of activities like carrying sports gear or beach apparel
  • T-shirts (available in men’s and women’s sizes)
  • Please note, we are no longer offering balloons due to environmental and animal safety concerns.

Place your order before the early bird deadline of July 19, 2019 for a chance to win a $100 Subway gift card (enough to treat the whole team to lunch!) and other fun prizes. Placing your order online (instead of faxing or mailing it) also gives you a chance to win a $50 Tim Horton’s gift card (treat your hard-working team to some delicious morning steam)! The last day to place your order for Animal Health Week materials is August 2, 2019. Our Generous Supporters

Generous support of the 2019 Animal Health Week campaign is provided by Principal Sponsor, Royal Canin, and Program Sponsors, iFinance Canada (Petcard), and The Personal.

This month we highlight one of the Program Sponsors, iFinance Canada (Petcard):

Petcard, Canada’s premier veterinary procedure financing option, has been enabling pet owners across the country to prioritize the health of their pets for over 20 years. While it is an honor to have assisted countless companion animals and their human caretakers in their most dire moments of need, the company also knows the importance of preventative measures. Petcard understands that these measures, which focus on the overall health of a furry loved one, are absolutely critical in ensuring they lead long, happy and healthy lives. In addition to regular veterinary check-ups, nutrition is one of the most important and, unfortunately, frequently overlooked components of companion animal health. All too often this is an area where pet owners lack awareness or comprehensive knowledge on how to best optimize their pets’ health through meeting their dietary needs. Petcard understands the most effective method to educate pet owners in this regard is through the relationships they form with their local veterinarians. These relationships help pet owners understand the unique dietary needs of their pets, based on species, age, and overall health. Petcard supports these relationships through the administering of wellness plans, providing payment plans for specialized pet foods purchased exclusively at veterinary clinics, and reducing the transactional nature of the veterinarian-client dynamic. This allows both parties to focus on what really matters, pet health and wellness. It is an unfortunate reality that cost concerns often represent the largest barrier for pet owners in accessing the best care for their pets. Petcard can assuage those concerns through its flexible financing options, which can facilitate higher adoption of wellness plans as well as specialized dietary programs. Petcard has been a long-time supporter of the CVMA and initiatives such as Animal Health Week. In partnership with the CVMA Petcard is proud to offer all current CVMA members the CVMA Petcard Program! Members can now register to offer Petcard at their clinics or offices with complimentary registration (a $250 value). The CVMA Petcard Program comes with a host of other exciting benefits such as exclusive rewards programs and increased search engine optimization opportunities.
