Animal Health + Human Health + Planet Health = One Health - Animal Health Week 2021 (October 3 to 9, 2021)
September 2, 2021
Animal Health Week (AHW) is an annual national public awareness campaign organized by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) and hosted by veterinarians across Canada.
Each year, through AHW, the veterinary community draws attention to an important health-related message. From October 3–9, 2021, the CVMA will celebrate the 36th annual Animal Health Week by raising awareness of One Health — the collaborative effort of multiple disciplines to attain optimal health for people, animals, and the environment.
This year’s theme, Animal Health 1 Human Health 1 Planet Health = One Health, will showcase how Canada’s veterinary professionals occupy unique positions within the national One Health community in protecting animal health which, in turn, protects everyone’s health.
Promotional tools, including a social media campaign, educational information, and articles will be available to promote Animal Health Week across the country. A free Animal Health Week poster was included in July’s issue of The Canadian Veterinary Journal and a 2nd poster arrived at veterinary hospitals and clinics across the country in August. The CVMA will not be selling merchandise this year as we are transitioning Animal Health Week celebrations to an online awareness campaign only.
As Animal Health Week nears, visit the Animal Health Week section under the Practice & Economics tab of the CVMA website to find tips and tools to help plan your celebrations.
Generous support of the 2021 Animal Health Week campaign is provided by Program Sponsors, iFinance Canada (Petcard) and Petsecure Pet Health Insurance. This month we highlight iFinance Canada (Petcard):
Part of the wonder of companion animals is their ability to play a seemingly endless number of roles in the lives of their human caretakers. Whether it is the indelible mark left in a child’s heart by their first pet, or the comfort provided to a trauma victim by an emotional support animal, or the sense of freedom and independence provided by a guide dog, the love and companionship of animals takes on a vital role in our lives. It is common to think of companion animals not only as friends, but as important parts of our family. The significance of these relationships can make the inevitable onset of illness and disease or an unexpected loss even more devastating and consequential. The One Health concept recognizes that veterinary care and compassion must focus not only on the needs of pets’ health, but also on the more worldly concerns of their human families. The financial impact of these issues can compound the stress of an already difficult situation.
iFinance Petcard helps alleviate these stresses as Canada’s premier veterinary procedure financing option for over a quarter of a century. Petcard contributes to the One Health concept by providing Canadians with flexible payment options enabling them to access the best in veterinary care. The unfortunate reality is financial constraints often force people into having to make agonizing choices regarding the well-being of their furry family members. Petcard helps Canadians mitigate prohibitively high treatment costs by turning them into affordable monthly payments. The effect of financial concerns can also significantly impact the anxiety of animal healthcare frontline workers – making what can already be a delicate and emotionally taxing aspect of their jobs even more difficult and heart-wrenching. Being able to provide payment alternatives can positively affect not only the physical health of companion animals, but also the emotional well-being of both their human caretakers and veterinary health staff.
