CVMA Welcomes Dr. Leighann Hartnett to Council

The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) is pleased to welcome Dr. Leighann Hartnett as the representative of CVMA members in Nova Scotia on Council.

Dr. Leighann Hartnett grew up in Prospect Bay, N.S. She graduated from Dalhousie University then attended the Atlantic Veterinary College. After graduation she began working as an equine practitioner in Massachusetts, where she worked on a variety of horses including the Boston Police Mounted Unit.

In 2005, she returned home to Nova Scotia where she worked in a mixed practice for three years, focusing on small animal surgery and equine work.

In 2008, Dr. Hartnett started working for the provincial government in N.S., as farm animal welfare veterinarian, Special Constable and Provincial Inspector, where she investigated complaints related to farm animal cruelty. She is now working with Nova Scotia Environment’s Environmental Health & Food Safety division to further develop programs for animal welfare and meat inspection.

Dr. Hartnett lives in Truro, NS, with her fiancé, two children and three dogs. She has been a member of Nova Scotia’s Veterinary Medical Association for seven years and is currently Past-President. During her free time, she enjoys horseback riding, gardening and spending time with her family.
