Vancouver, B.C. – Dr. Barry Stemshorn was honoured with the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) President’s Award for his exceptional commitment to the association and his tireless contributions to veterinary medicine and policy at the international level.
“The CVMA is proud to honour Dr. Stemshorn with the President’s Award for his commitment to the betterment of the veterinary profession and his work with international governments and organizations,” says Dr. Troye McPherson, 2017-18 CVMA President.
Dr. Stemshorn graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Université de Montréal, in 1974. He went on to join Agriculture Canada where he served in veterinary laboratory, policy, and operational roles including several executive positions in the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. During these years he earned a PhD at the Ontario Veterinary College (1979) and developed scientific networks in Latin America and the Caribbean working with the United Nations University and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture.
Following a year with the cabinet secretariat of the Privy Council Office, he joined Environment Canada as an Assistant Deputy Minister to lead national programs to manage toxic substances and reduce air, water, and soil pollution. As a Senior Fellow at the University of Ottawa from 2006 to 2015, he co-authored a high-level study on the management of mercury in China, and led development of a Certificate Program in Regulatory Leadership for senior public servants, offered jointly with Carleton University. He continues to support the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) in the evaluation of national veterinary services.
He is a volunteer and donor for several environmental organizations, Veterinarians without Borders (Canada), and the CVMA where he has been treasurer since 2010. He was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002 and Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 for his contributions to Canada.
The CVMA President's Award is given from time to time to recognize an individual member for his/her exceptional contributions and devotion to the association. Recipients are selected by the President and the CVMA Executive Committee.
