SCVMA Committee Update - March 2017

Greetings, Student Veterinarians!

Our SCVMA Committee, composed of a Junior and Senior Representative from each of Canada’s five veterinary colleges, met on March 7, 2017 via teleconference.  The primary purpose of this meeting was to report on the activities of the SCVMA and to discuss future events and program revisions.

Insurance Lunch n’ Learns

| UCVM: February 27 | OVC: March 2 | WCVM: March 13 | AVC: March 16 (TBC) | FMV: March 15 |

This month, each veterinary college is hosting a lunch n’ learn on the CVMA Insurance Program, sponsored by Western Financial Group. So far, the response has been positive, with many students attending and asking great questions.

SCVMA Jr. Rep and President Selection Process

The SCVMA Committee has been involved in ongoing discussions on how to standardize the Jr. Representative selection process across the five colleges in a manner that is democratic and in line with CVMA by-laws.  After much discussion, it has been decided to revert back to electing our representatives via a popular vote at each college.  We are working to make more detailed descriptions of each position, to give candidates as much information as possible when they apply.  This change will take effect at the beginning of the next school year, pending notification with each college’s Student Association.

We are also considering whether or not we should change the way our President is selected.  Currently, the position rotates each year among the five veterinary colleges.

SCVMA Teacher of the Year Award

Each year, the SCVMA Representatives survey the third-year class at their respective schools (fourth-year class for Faculté de médecine vétérinaire (FMV)), to determine the professor who inspired students the most by his/her subject approach, teaching methods, their interest and enthusiasm toward the subject. Voting is taking place at each college this spring (with the exception of FMV, who selects their recipient in the fall), so stay tuned!

2018 SCVMA Symposium Planning

This past January, the University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) hosted a most enjoyable SCVMA Symposium, which was attended by over 200 student veterinarians from across the country!  We are now looking forward to the next SCVMA Symposium, to be hosted by the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) in Charlottetown, PEI, tentatively scheduled for January 18th (travel day), 19th, and 20th, 2018. Planning is already underway at AVC!

SCVMA VetRap Newsletter

Each year, the SCVMA publishes the “VetRap” Newsletter, with great articles from veterinary students across Canada (and in the next issue we will include one article from each of International Student Affiliate Colleges).  A call for submissions will be emailed out shortly.

CVMA Convention July 16-18, 2017

We are looking forward to attending the 2017 CVMA Convention in Charlottetown, PEI!  Did you know that students are eligible to receive free event registration by signing up for 10 hours of volunteering? For more information or to request a registration form, email conventions@cvma-acmv.org.

SCVMA Student Leadership Workshop (SLW) – Update

On November 12, 2016, the first SCVMA Leadership Workshop (SLW) was held at Le Faculté de médecine vétérinaire (FMV) in Saint-Hyacinthe, QC and almost 60 FMV students participated.  We received very positive feedback from student attendees, and have decided to make it an annual event as part of the rotation of SCVMA activities.  The next workshop will be held at OVC, the weekend of November 18th, 2017, and will be facilitated by Dr. Rick DeBowes.

CVMA Council Update

The SCVMA President, Ms. Elizabeth Hartnett, attended Committee Weekend in Ottawa, March 3 – 5, 2017, where she provided the CVMA Council and Executive Committee with an update on the SCVMA activities.  They were glad to hear our events, including Symposium, the SLW, and the One Voice presentations went well and that students are active and engaged in the CVMA.  Council was briefed on our proposed changes to the Jr. Rep and President selection process. The full Council report will be published in the May edition of the Canadian Veterinary Journal.

Thank you to all our outgoing SCVMA Sr. Representatives, for your service and dedication! To all student veterinarians, good luck on your final exams!
