The Douglas College VTEC program is excited to announce the launch of its Veterinary Anesthesia Refresher Certificate program. This program is a comprehensive review of Canine and Feline Anesthesia, targeted to RVTs working in small animal practice, and is the first of two certificate programs that will be offered. The second certificate (under development) will be Veterinary Anesthesia Advanced techniques and these two certificates together are designed to support RVTs who wish to pursue their specialty in Veterinary Anesthesia. DVMs and unregistered RVTs/ internationally trained DVMs are also welcome to register for this program.
INSTRUCTOR:
The primary instructor and course designer for this program is Ashley De Santis, MEd, RVT, VTS (Anesthesia & Analgesia) who graduated from the University College of the Cariboo (now TRU) in 2003. In 2009, Ashley was the first RVT in British Columbia achieve her Veterinary Technician Specialty certification in Anesthesia & Analgesia. Her other passion for training and mentoring fellow employees led her to a Lab Facilitator position at Douglas College in 2010. As Ashley’s instructing experience grew, so did her passion for curriculum and instructional design, simulation education, and pedagogical best practices, which led her to complete her Master of Education (Health Education & Active Living) through Simon Fraser University. Ashley is now a full-time Faculty Instructor in the Douglas College Veterinary Technology Program.
PROGRAM:
This Anesthesia Refresher certificate offers 70 hours of CE including 3 asynchronous instructor-supported online courses and a 4 day wet Lab - see attached program syllabus for more details. Completion of the 3 online courses is required for registration in the wet Lab, or DVMs and experienced RVTs can challenge the final exam in each of the online courses in order to satisfy this prerequisite to registration for the wet Lab. This program has been submitted (but is not yet approved) for 70 hours of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize RACE approval.
DATES:
The online asynchronous courses will have a continuous rolling enrollment with start dates every 2 weeks - The first start date is January 9th: for this date, registration must be completed by December 21st. The 4 day in-person wet Lab will run once a year. The 2023 wet Lab is tentatively scheduled for June 20th - 23rd 2023. It is recommended that participants who wish to do the wet Lab in 2023, register for and start the online courses no later than March 20th 2023.
COST:
Each of the 3 online courses is $360 (total of 45 hours CE)
The 4 day wet Lab is $950 (25 hours CE)

DVMs who wish to register can send a copy of their Veterinary Degree (translated into English please).
If you do not have a relevant Veterinary Technology, Veterinary Nursing or Veterinarian diploma or degree, but still wish to register for this program please email us for details on how to apply: a letter of recommendation from a DVM that you work with, will be required.
