SCVMA Student Leadership Workshop

Your Students of the CVMA (SCVMA) Committee representatives believe in the importance of providing veterinary students with non-technical training (life skills), particularly relating to teamwork, communication, and professionalism, that students may not have the chance to learn in traditional vet med curriculums. This is why, in 2016, the SCVMA Committee planned and held the first SCVMA Student Leadership Workshop (SLW) at la Faculté de médecine vétérinaire (FMV) in Saint-Hyacinthe, QC. Due to its success and the valuable opportunity this event gives student veterinarians to learn considerable teamwork skills and personal and career development strategies, the SLW became an annual event, hosted in the fall, rotating among the five Canadian veterinary colleges.

The future rotation for the SLW is:

2018: Western College of Veterinary Medicine

2019: University of Calgary – Faculty of Veterinary Medicine

2020: Atlantic Veterinary College

2021: Faculté de médecine vétérinaire

2022: Ontario Veterinary College

The current SLW facilitator is Dr. Rick DeBowes, Professor of Surgery and Director of the Professional Life Skills Program at the Washington State University (WSU) College of Veterinary Medicine.  Dr. DeBowes has practiced in both private small animal practice and academic equine practice settings. He served as Chairman for Clinical Sciences at both Kansas State and Washington State University Colleges of Veterinary Medicine and has worked within and led large veterinary health care teams. He oversees the practice management curriculum and co-directs the communication courses in the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. DeBowes is a frequent speaker and presenter of leadership programs. He co-developed the AVMA Veterinary Leadership Experience (VLE) and a series of other interactive, experiential leadership education experiences for healthcare team members. These unique programs have been presented to students, faculty, practitioners, and health care team members in numerous countries across four continents. Dr. DeBowes has presented over 100 programs to Canadian practices, businesses, and corporations.

If your College is next in the SLW rotation, more information will be provided to you in September, at the start of the school year, or you can reach out to your College’s SCVMA Committee representative.
