The 2023 National Tick Awareness Month Campaign Reminds Us that We Have All the Tools We Need to Outsmart Ticks!

February 9, 2023

Outsmart Ticks! Anytime. Anywhere.

Since 2016, National Tick Awareness Month (NTAM), led by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) in partnership with Merck Animal Health, has focused on key components of tick awareness to help protect pets and their people. We have shared information on when ticks are active, maps and research showing where ticks are present in Canada, and focused on the important role of the veterinary community in promoting public health.

This year’s campaign, kicking off on March 1, 2023, reminds us that we have all the tools we need to Outsmart Ticks! Anytime. Anywhere.

“Though we have created many resources throughout the 8 years of the NTAM campaign, the CVMA in partnership with Public Health Agency of Canada, recently completed research that highlighted gaps that remain for owners when it comes to protecting their pets and themselves against ticks. This year, we are focused on building more awareness for the available tools and resources to help close these gaps,” says CVMA President, Dr. Chris Bell. “We can help our clients outsmart ticks. The new in-clinic NTAM poster highlights season, location, and prevention, and will be provided to all clinics in Canada. New social media posts are intended to amplify these messages to get the word out and point toward valuable resources for veterinary teams and pet owners. We are in a unique position in veterinary medicine, in that while we are educating owners on the optimal protection for their pets, we can also help them apply the knowledge they have acquired to protect themselves.”

Dr. Bell, adds: “The tools created through previous NTAM campaigns help our clients feel empowered and confident in their ability to protect themselves, their families and their pets against ticks — anytime, anywhere.”

NTAM 2023 tools and resources
This year, in recognition of the return of clients through clinics doors, we are providing a printed poster combining the themes and visual identity from the previous campaigns to display in waiting rooms. We are also creating new social media posts to share key points that address the identified knowledge gaps and direct pet owners to high quality resources. As always, tools from previous campaigns are still available on TickTalkCanada.com.
