The CVMA develops codes of practice, which offer recommendations for the ideal standard of animal care. Each code of practice is the result of several years of extensive research performed by CVMA members and other volunteers.

The CVMA has produced three editions of the Code of Practice for Canadian Kennel Operations, two editions of the Code of Practice for Canadian Cattery Operations (second edition is titled 'Code of Practice for the Care of Domestic Cats'), and has worked together with the partners of the National Farm Animal Care Council in the development of a collection of codes of practice for the care and handling of farm animals.
