Ontario Veterinarian Honoured with Prestigious Professional Award

HALIFAX, N.S. – Dr. Jim Fairles was honoured with the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) President’s Award for his long and dedicated service to the association and his tireless contributions to the veterinary profession.

Dr. Fairles earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1980 and an MBA degree in 1999 from the University of Guelph. He has experience in private mixed practice in Mount Forest, Ont. and international experience in China. Since 2004, Dr. Fairles has been a Client Services Veterinarian at the Animal Health Laboratory, University of Guelph.

Dr. Fairles has been involved with veterinary associations on local, provincial, and national levels. He is a past-president of the CVMA and the Canadian Association of Swine Veterinarians.

"Dr. Fairles has been a strong and consistent presence in CVMA; his calm and considered input has helped maintain the important relationship CVMA has with production animal veterinarians and species groups. This has been not only to the benefit of animal health and welfare but public health as well,” says Dr. Louis Kwantes, President of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association.

Dr. Fairles is also a past chair of the Canadian Animal Health Coalition and a member of all national species groups. Currently, Dr. Fairles is an industry representative on the Animal Health Canada board of directors where he is chair of the financial committee.

"To me, Dr. Fairles represents the best of what veterinary medicine has to offer – a considered and steady presence, always ready with support, information and intervention when needed to maximize animal health and welfare. In the agriculture sector, this advances not only animal well-being but also the well-being of people who own and benefit from animals," adds Dr. Louis Kwantes.

"I am honoured to present the President's Award to Dr. Jim Fairles, as his work in the production animal sector highlights the importance of animal welfare, as well as the intersection and relationship between animal and human health,” concludes Dr. Louis Kwantes.

Dr. Fairles resides in Elora, Ont. With his wife Mary Lou. In his spare time, he enjoys various sports activities including hockey and triathlons, plus astronomy, airplanes and, most importantly, his grandchildren.

The CVMA President's Award recognizes an individual member for his/her exceptional contributions and devotion to the association. Recipients are selected by the President and the CVMA Executive Committee.
