"Ears, Nasal Planum, and Paws" features ear disease in dogs and cats with emphasis on how addressing these issues can contribute to overall success in long-term therapy. Treatment and management of chronic otitis externa with special emphasis on Pseudomonas otitis externa, with brief overview of otitis media and otitis interna, will also be discussed. Also a variety of diseases, including autoimmune and neoplastic conditions, which often mimic other conditions, cause dermatologic signs affecting the nasal planum, paw pads, or both. We will discuss some diseases that affect these sites including clinical presentation, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment.

Session Instructors Biographies

Serge Chalhoub, DVM, DACVIM (SAIM)

Dr. Serge Chalhoub graduated the Faculté de médecine vétérinaire (FMV) of the Université de Montréal in 2004. Serge followed this with a one-year rotating small animal clinical internship at the same institution. Serge pursued a residency in small animal internal medicine at the Animal Medical Center (AMC) in New York City. He stayed on at the AMC as their first renal/hemodialysis fellow and then as a staff doctor. Dr. Chalhoub has been a faculty member at the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) since 2012. He was the recipient of the 2013 and 2021 Canadian Veterinary Medical Association’s Teacher of the Year Award, the 2015 University of Calgary Team Teacher of the Year Award, and the 2017 Carl J. Norden Distinguished Teacher Award. He has authored and co-authored numerous scientific articles and book chapters on veterinary point of care ultrasound, renal and urinary medicine, and lectures around the world on these topics.

Linda Crews, DVM

Dr. Linda Crews graduated from Ontario Veterinary College at Guelph University, in 1997. She is a small animal Veterinarian with a special interest in Integrative Medicine, and a Medical Records enthusiast. Dr. Crews worked for the College of Veterinarians of Ontario for 9 years as a Medical Records Reviewer while practicing in a variety of clinical environments. After moving to BC in 2009, she began to work with the CVBC as a Complaints Investigator. This experience, combined with her studies at the JIBC, directed her focus towards teaching practitioners "How to create better medical records, Use them to support their practice, and Elevate the quality of the medical care their team provides". Dr. Crews is dedicated to her patients, her clients, and her peers, and she uses her medical records to teach exemplary care. When she is not working, she can often be found outdoors, with food, friends & family.

Allison Foster, DVM, DACVD

Dr. Allison Foster is a board-certified veterinary dermatologist who operates the WCVM Veterinary Medical Centre's veterinary dermatology clinical services. Dr. Foster was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana and received her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the University of New Orleans. She then attended Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine and received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) in 2004. Following graduation, Dr. Foster moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she worked as a general practitioner for several years before deciding to pursue specialty training. Dr. Foster completed a small animal medicine and surgery rotating internship at VCA Veterinary Care Animal Hospital and Referral Center and then completed a three-year dermatology residency at Iowa State University and the University of Tennessee. She became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Dermatologists in 2014.

Odette O, DVM, DACVAA

Dr. Odette O graduated from the University of Guelph (2001) with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. She earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Guelph, Ontario Veterinary College (2004). After several years spent in small animal general practice, Dr. O completed her residency in Anesthesia and Pain Management at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and became board-certified in anesthesia and analgesia (2013). Dr. O believes Anesthesiology is as much as it is an art, as it is a science. Being able to assess each patient individually and formulate a plan that best suits their specific needs is both the challenge and the beauty of Anesthesiology. The chance to be an integral part of the care team to support both the needs of the patient as well as fellow specialists is truly rewarding to her. Her anesthesia-related interests include the practical aspects of clinical anesthesia and pain management, as well as anesthesia of unusual species and acupuncture. She completed the International Academy of Veterinary Medical Acupuncture course in 2012, then the CuraCore Advanced Acupuncture Course in 2022. Dr. O prides herself in optimizing patient care and also enjoys teaching anesthesia-related topics to students, technicians, and fellow veterinarians. Dr. O is currently the Assistant Medical Director at SAGE Veterinary Centers, Dublin and is also an active member of the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia (ACVAA) including serving as a member of the Board of Directors and numerous other committees over the years.

Katherine Pankratz, DVM, DACVB

Dr. Katherine (Kat) Pankratz graduated with her veterinary degree from the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 2014 and pursued a small animal rotating internship in New York. She completed her behavioral medicine residency program at North Carolina State University and became board certified by the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists in 2018. She stayed on at NC State for her fellowship and as a clinical instructor before joining the Animal Behavior Clinic in Portland, OR in 2019. She is an adjunct professor at NC State College of Veterinary Medicine and teaches veterinary behavior to the public, veterinary students, and fellow veterinarians. For her research on the use of behavioral medication to improve the welfare of cats, she was awarded the RK Anderson ACVB Resident Award and JFMS Resident Best Paper Award.
