The SBCV through its VAADV (Veterinarians Assisting Animals of Domestic Violence) program is partnering with a research project where our members in certain communities are invited to provide care to the dogs of individuals fleeing intimate partner violence. This project offers funding to cover a basic examination, at your prevailing rate; all other immediately necessary veterinary care costs are determined via discussion with the project coordinator.

The project is CALM (Canine Assessment and Low-arousal Management), a research project from Simon Fraser University developed in agreement with Warm Hearts Pet Safe Havens Society and BC Society of Transition Houses (BCSTH). The necessary grants and both animal and human ethics approval have been received.

CALM supports survivors of intimate partner violence who are entering transition houses by making it safer and more feasible for their dogs to accompany them. The participating transition houses are located in Burnaby, Hope, Kamloops, Nanaimo, Penticton, Port Alberni, Princeton, Salmon Arm, Smithers, Sooke, Squamish, and Trail.

If you are an SBCV member working in any of these communities and you are in agreement with all the parameters of this project, learn more here and please consider signing up.

You are welcome to call the SBCV office if you have questions. Please ask for Michéle at 604.283.3069 or email her at sbcvvaadv@gmail.com.
