Animal Welfare Foundation of Canada Sponsors the Dr. Carol Morgan Memorial Award

August 21, 2025

The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) is pleased to share that the Animal Welfare Foundation of Canada (AWFC) is sponsoring the Dr. Carol Morgan Memorial Award. The award provides funding for continued education and training in ethics and animal welfare for veterinarians who are advancing the application of these principles within the profession. Applications are open until October 15, 2025, for courses to be taken in the following year.

Dr. Carol Morgan cared deeply about the welfare of animals. After graduating from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 1988, she worked in companion and farm animal practices in Ontario and British Columbia. Her experiences with the ethical challenges faced by veterinarians inspired her to pursue graduate studies at the University of British Columbia’s Animal Welfare Program, where her doctoral research focused on moral decision-making in veterinary medicine.

Diagnosed with cancer in 2006, Dr. Morgan underwent several invasive treatments and surgeries but persevered, completing her PhD in 2009. She was a pioneer in interdisciplinary studies through the W. Maurice Young Centre for Applied Ethics and the UBC Animal Welfare Program. During her doctoral work, she also served as Deputy Registrar for the BC Veterinary Medical Association and developed and taught a course on veterinary ethics through the Veterinary Information Network.

Dr. Morgan played a major role in advancing animal welfare nationally and internationally. She served as a valued member of the CVMA Animal Welfare Committee, where she helped develop resources on unnecessary cosmetic surgery in dogs and pain management for veterinarians. She was widely respected for her philosophical perspective, expressed with both eloquence and humour. She also contributed to the National Farm Animal Care Council’s code development process, the Code of Practice for Canadian Kennel Operations, the Canadian Council on Animal Care, the BC SPCA, and various NFACC Code Development Committees.

Her contributions were recognized with several honours, including the 2011 Frederic McGrand Award for Excellence in Animal Welfare, the 2012 CVMA Humane Award, and the 2014 BC SPCA Lifetime Achievement Award.

Dr. Morgan’s life was tragically cut short in November 2015, but her legacy continues. With the 10th anniversary of her passing, the AWFC remains deeply honoured to sponsor this award, ensuring her vision of a more humane world—where ethics and animal welfare are central – continues to inspire the profession.
