The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association welcomes measures to improve access to veterinary products

June 15, 2026

The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) welcomes the Government of Canada's commitment to reducing regulatory barriers and improving access to veterinary products as part of the new National Food Security Strategy that was announced on June 11.

Of particular importance to veterinarians is the strategy's commitment to eliminate regulatory backlogs and accelerate approvals for seed, feed, fertilizers, and veterinary products. The government has indicated in the strategy that these measures will help speed up access to livestock vaccines for cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry, and fish, as well as probiotics for poultry that are already available in other jurisdictions.

The CVMA has actively advocated for improved availability and accessibility of veterinary medications and biologics in Canada. We are encouraged by the government's recognition of these challenges and its commitment to modernizing regulatory processes, reducing backlogs, and making greater use of scientific evidence and reviews from trusted international partners.

"Timely access to safe and effective veterinary vaccines is essential to protecting animal health and welfare, strengthening food security, and helping prevent and manage disease outbreaks," said Dr. Tracy Fisher, CVMA President. "We are pleased to see these priorities reflected in the National Food Security Strategy."

The CVMA looks forward to learning more about the initiative and engaging with government as implementation moves forward. We remain committed to working collaboratively to ensure that Canadian veterinarians have timely access to the tools they need to protect animal health and support a strong, sustainable food system.
