Nova Scotia Veterinary Practice Receives National Award for Excellence

July 22, 2022

HALIFAX, N.S. – Fundy Veterinarians Ltd., has been recognized as Practice of the Year by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) for outstanding achievement within their community.

Founded by Drs. Ed and Al MacAulay in 1971, Fundy Vets was built on the core values of upholding service to the veterinary profession and the community of Shubenacadie, N.S. Fundy Vets has a long history of supporting local causes including youth athletics and education, school breakfast programs, 4-H, food banks, and refugee causes, to name only a very few. They have grown from a food animal practice to a thriving 14 veterinarian team serving a wide variety of animals including pets.

Large animals have been Fundy Vets’ foundation from the beginning, providing service to dairy and equine clients and growing over time to include companion animals and now providing service to a large part of central and northern Nova Scotia.

“As many pet owners can attest, their animal is a member of the family. The veterinarians and staff at Fundy Vets have built a strong partnership with my family. When you can call a vet office and they know your name and file number off by heart, you know you have a strong relationship. The staff at Fundy Vets is always a short phone call away, a short drive down the street, and a part of my community,” says Shari Mallory, a long-time client of Fundy Vets.

“This is a very busy vet practice, but I have never felt rushed or inconvenienced as a client. The practice is also one of three local vet practices that rotate emergency hours. Not only do they look after their own clients, but they also extend into the community by cooperating with other clinics. I am always reassured that someone is available 24-hours if my pet needs medical care,” adds Mallory.

Fundy Vets has strived to never lose sight of its roots and has always remained focused on long-term service to clients and communities. The practice has hospitals in Shubenacadie and Truro and large animal mobiles, all serving clients in communities throughout six counties in Nova Scotia.

“We have an educational program here at the ranch where we include our youth to participate in the care of all animals. Fundy Vet supports this by going above and beyond by allowing everyone to help, watch, ask questions, and participate where possible, in the care and maintenance of the animals,” says Marylyn Andrews of Rocky Hollow Ranch. “Dr. Trevor Lawson examines every horse during our yearly large animal check. During this time, we usually have several students/parents come watch and ask questions. Trevor is always professional, kind, caring, and tries to answer everyone.”

“Trevor and the team of vets at Fundy deliver an extremely high standard of care at all our appointments. They have gone above and beyond for us in emergency situations – rushing results after hours without hesitation. It’s a huge comfort to know they are just a phone call away, day or night,” says Wylie Roberts, a certified coach with Equestrian Canada.

Fundy Vets recently celebrated a major milestone of serving their communities for 50 years. The clinic team members are proud of their history of being a force for the well-being of clients, animals, and communities, and look forward to growing with their communities for the next 50 years.
