In Memoriam: Dr. Carlton Gyles
February 26, 2025

The CVMA recognizes with sadness and reverence the passing of Dr. Carlton Gyles, a distinguished leader and true giant of the veterinary profession in Canada.
Originally from Jamaica, Dr. Gyles earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) in 1964, followed by a Master of Science and a PhD. He joined the faculty at OVC in 1969, where he dedicated his career to veterinary education and research until his retirement in 2005.
A Professor Emeritus at OVC, Dr. Gyles was recently appointed to the Order of Canada in recognition of his internationally acclaimed research in veterinary public health and food safety, particularly in advancing the understanding of E. coli and their enterotoxins.
Beyond his research, Dr. Gyles made invaluable contributions to veterinary literature, serving as Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Veterinary Journal from 2008 to 2020 and as a member of the editorial boards of Veterinary Microbiology and Advances in Veterinary Science. In 2018, he was awarded a lifetime membership to the CVMA in recognition of his profound impact on the profession.
Dr. Gyles will be remembered as an outstanding educator, mentor, researcher, and administrator – but above all, as a true gentleman. His warmth, grace, and passion for learning enriched the lives of all who knew him.
The CVMA extends its deepest condolences to Dr. Gyles’ family, friends, colleagues, and the countless veterinarians he inspired throughout his remarkable career.
