GENERAL INFORMATION
Preparing for the Clinical Proficiency Examination (CPE) is the responsibility of each candidate. To prepare effectively, candidates should identify their individual learning needs by reviewing the CPE Manual of Administration (MOA) and, where applicable, feedback received from previous examination attempts.
The self-assessment tool on this page is designed to help candidates identify areas where additional learning or practice may be beneficial. Once learning needs have been identified, candidates can use the accompanying reference list to locate relevant educational resources. The references cover a broad range of topics and are intended as a resource only; they are not a study guide or a comprehensive list of all material that may be assessed on the examination.
The National Examining Board (NEB) does not endorse or recommend any specific review course, study guide, textbook, or other preparation resource for the CPE.
PREPARING FOR THE EXAM
Your veterinary education and clinical experience provide the foundation for success on the CPE. Before taking the examination, you should evaluate your current knowledge and skills against the subject areas and competencies outlined in the CPE MOA to determine where additional preparation may be required.
The CPE MOA is an essential resource for all candidates. It describes the examination format, competencies being assessed, performance expectations, and evaluation criteria. Reviewing the MOA will help you understand the structure of the examination and guide your preparation.
After identifying your learning needs, it is your responsibility to select appropriate reference materials, educational resources, and, where appropriate, additional clinical experience to address any identified gaps.
Candidates preparing to retake a failed section should focus on meaningful learning and remediation rather than simply repeating the examination. Review previous feedback carefully, if applicable, identify the underlying knowledge or skill gaps, and develop a preparation plan that addresses those areas. Before attempting the examination again, consider whether your learning activities and remediation efforts have sufficiently improved your knowledge, skills, and overall readiness for success.
