Québec Veterinarian Honoured for Bridging Language and Culture in Veterinary Medicine

June 26, 2025

Dr Jean GauvinVictoria, B.C. – Dr. Jean Gauvin received the 2025 Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) President’s Award for his exceptional service to the association and transformative contributions to the veterinary profession during the Annual CVMA Awards Gala on June 25.

Following in his veterinarian grandfather’s footsteps, Dr. Gauvin holds a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine, a certificate in small animal dentistry from the Université de Montréal, and a certificate in fish health management from the University of Georgia.

After nearly four decades in small animal practice, he retired in 2019 and now works as a consultant and translator. His academic contributions include teaching roles at the Faculté de médecine vétérinaire, the Atlantic Veterinary College, and CEGEP Lionel-Groulx.

Dr. Gauvin has served the profession through national and provincial associations since 1984. A Past CVMA President, he chaired the 2014 Summit on Antimicrobial Stewardship and currently chairs the CVMA Communications Advisory Group and the governance and ethics committee of the Association des médecins vétérinaires du Québec en pratique des petits animaux (AMVQ). He is also a Past President of the AMVQ and served on the licensing board of the Ordre des médecins vétérinaires du Québec.

“Dr. Gauvin has contributed to the success of our profession in ways that few others can match,” says Dr. Tim Arthur, 2024-2025 CVMA president. “In the Province of Quebec, he is known by the public as a television and radio personality and a promoter of animal welfare. The profession knows him as a mentor, a professor, a consultant, and as a spokesperson.”

A media veteran with more than 35 years in broadcasting, Dr. Gauvin authored two reptile guides and a book on canine and feline emotions, co-created educational videos on animal behaviour, and co-hosted the popular TV show Pas si bête que ça !. He currently serves as a veterinary columnist for Radio-Canada Première’s Moteur de recherche.

“At CVMA, Dr. Gauvin is recognized as a visionary,” adds Dr. Arthur. “He led the charge to build a stronger bridge between French-speaking veterinarians in Québec and the rest of the country and ensured this legacy by mentoring the next generation of CVMA representatives from that province. Under his leadership, the CVMA became less North America-centric by forging closer ties with our European colleagues, bringing in new ideas and new ways of thinking about common problems.”

His long-standing contributions have earned him the AMVQ Damasse Généreux Award in 1995 and the CVMA Small Animal Practitioner of the Year Award in 2000.

The CVMA President’s Award recognizes an individual member for their exceptional contributions and devotion to the association.
