Welcome to the 2026–2027 school year!
To all returning DVM students, welcome back, and to those who are just beginning their veterinary school journey, congratulations! Being accepted into veterinary school is an incredible accomplishment, and the year ahead will be filled with opportunities for personal growth, new friendships, and memories that will last a lifetime.
This year, I encourage both new and returning students to get involved in their school communities. Veterinary school offers so many opportunities to make a difference, have your voice heard, and connect with students across all years who share your interests and passions. The Students of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (SCVMA) is made up of student representatives from each of Canada’s five veterinary colleges. Our mission is to connect veterinary students across Canada and ensure that students have a voice within the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) and the veterinary profession as a whole. Our current SCVMA team includes Jin Cho (UCVM), Maria Gorelik (FMV), Megan Guptill (AVC), Arisia Swystun (WCVM), and myself, Emma Jessop (OVC). This year, the SCVMA team is excited to host One Voice and Hot Topic sessions focused on an emerging and increasingly relevant topic in our profession: Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Veterinary Medicine. We look forward to creating opportunities for productive discussion and hearing the diverse perspectives of veterinary students from across Canada. As we begin this new academic year, I am excited to see what lies ahead for veterinary students across the country. I hope this year brings meaningful conversations, new connections, collaboration, and a strong sense of community within and between our veterinary colleges. Although we each bring different experiences and perspectives to the profession, we share a collective voice as Canadian veterinary students. By using that voice, we have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in our education and help shape the future of veterinary medicine in Canada.
On behalf of the SCVMA, I wish you all a wonderful year ahead filled with learning, growth, health, and happiness. I look forward to everything we will accomplish together throughout the 2026–2027 school year.
All the best,
Emma Jessop
